Keith Haring goes to New Jersey

Rare works by the New York street artist get a showing next month - on the far side of the North River

Keith Haring, the late, great eighties pop artist, might have been born in Pennsylvania, but his bold images of barking dogs, hearts and radiant babies will forever be associated with the vibrant street art scene of downtown New York in the 1980s.
However, for the next two months, beginning this weekend, the best place to see Haring's NYC street works is across the Hudson, in Jersey City.

From December 2 to January 27, Mana Contemporary, the Jersey City art storage and handling company, are hosting an exhibition of large-scale Haring pieces, including two oversized murals, spray-painted on a metal fence of the Asphalt Green Park, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, back in 1984, as well as a selection of the artist' famous subway drawings, and a rare painting on leather.

Mana says the works have not been on show in the US for 15 years – quite a time for an artist like Haring, who only passed away in 1990 – and that the exhibition forms part of a larger show of contemporary art at the facility. Worth a trip, perhaps, for those in the Five Boroughs and beyond. And if any New Yorkers are preternaturally disinclined to leave Manhattan island, Mana have even laid on shuttle buses. No excuses now. Why not take a copy of our Pop Art book for the ride?
