Smiling cars, sculptural backpacks and communication via concrete

Senseware, the second exhibition to take place at Ron Arad’s new Design Museum in Israel, features the work of 17 designers and artists exploring the possibilities of the latest Japanese-made artificial fibres.

Selected from various fields including architecture, interior design, product design and fashion, each designer has paired up with one of Japan’s leading synthetic fibre and textile manufacturers. The result is a showcase of some of the most exciting advances in synthetic fibre technology today.

British designer Ross Lovegrove has created a series of sculptural backpacks from Triaxial Woven Fabric (TWF), a material created using a new weaving process that allows structures to respond to dynamic surface changes in three dimensions, while the architect Kengo Kuma has used CON/FIBER, a material composed of plastic optical fibers embedded in concrete, for an interactive artwork to demonstrate the potential means of communication via concrete. 

Senseware is on show at the Design Museum, Holon until 4 September 2010.
