Colman Andrews

Colman Andrews reads from The Taste of America This week: Salt Water Taffy

Our critically acclaimed and mellifluously-voiced author returns with another captivating story from his new book

It's been a week or two since we've posted up a sound file of Colman Andrews reading from his great new book The Taste of America. Colman has sent us another batch of readings and today we'd like to bring you him reading the chapter about Salt Water Taffy.

Like many of the foods in the book this will be something new to our non-American readers. As Colman points out, this candy is not made with salt water. Invented on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, it is said to have earned its sobriquet after a flood tide inundated a fancy shop near the beach (though as Colman says, this sounds suspiciously like folk etymology). Listen to our Soundcloud of Colman's reading below to discover more.
