Is this Stephen Harris and The Sportsman's BIGGEST book award yet?

The Sportsman won Cookery Book of the Year at last night's Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards

Stephen Harris of The Sportsman won his biggest award yet for his book The Sportsman at the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink awards last night.

Stephen, who earlier this year won the Food Book of the Year at the André Simon Book Awards was clearly blown away by this latest honour, Cookery Book of the Year, telling assembled guests:

"I am overwhelmed by winning this award and with such great competition. I didn’t ever plan to write a book but I am so happy now that I did. I am pleased that people have enjoyed reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it.”

The Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards are among the most prestigious in the UK with a roll call of the most hard to please palettes in Britain making up the judging panel. They include:

Ewan Venters, CEO of Fortnum & Mason, Diana Henry, author and broadcaster, food writer for The Sunday Telegraph and columnist for Stella Magazine, José Pizarro, author, chef and owner of José Tapas, Pizarro Restaurant, José Pizarro Broadgate and Little José, Marina O’Loughlin, restaurant critic for The Sunday Times Magazine, Dan Keeling, co-founder and editor of Noble Rot magazine and co-owner of Noble Rot Wine Bar & Restaurant, Henry Jeffreys, drinks contributor to the Spectator, Guardian and Food & Wine and author of Empire of Booze and Pete Brown, broadcaster, author and journalist.

A very proud Stephen Harris!
A very proud Stephen Harris!

Much more than a cookbook The Sportsman tells the story of the transformation from sticky carpet boozer into an internationally acclaimed restaurant, serving innovative regional cuisine and acquiring a cult following around the world.

It also tells the story of Stephen's own transformation from guitarist in a punk band to history teacher to financial advisor to world-renowned chef who's built a reputation for his pared-back style. The Sportsman  epitomises all that's great about British cooking. If you can't make it to Kent you can visit The Sportsman  in the pages of his book here. Congratulations again Stephen.
