The Failsafe Gift Guide - chosen by Aaron Rose

The curator who's worked with Sofia Coppola, Spike Jonze and Sonic Youth recommends his Xmas best buys

That last minute panic about what to get friends and family for Christmas kicked in yet? Fear not, we've got another failsafe gift guide for you and today it's chosen by curator, writer and director Aaron Rose.

Rose has worked with Spike Jonze, Sofia Coppola and Sonic Youth. In 2008 he directed the film Beautiful Losers, which focussed on the careers and work of an artist collective which started in the early 90s and used the DIY aesthetics from skateboarding, graffiti and underground, punk and hip-hop music. The film featured Rose himself, Barry McGee, Ed Templeton and Mike Mills, among others. Rose followed up its release with a touring exhibition.

Take a look at the list below to see what books he recommends and with delivery before Christmas available until the end of today (December 20) in the US and the UK tomorrow (December 21), there's no excuse to fit in some last minute shopping. After all, it's positively your last chance.

Yesterday's Sandwich, Boris Mikhailov  "I'm not sure when I discovered this book but ever since I've owned it I cannot count the number of times I've looked at it. It's seriously one of my favorite books."

Andy Warhol “Giant” Size, Edited by Phaidon  "I bought this book the day it came out and rushed home and devoured it. The next day I lent it to a friend to teach his young sons about Warhol and I've never seen it again. I have to ask for it back."

Contemporary Artists Series: Mike Kelley " In my opinion this is the definitive book on Mike Kelley. His early work is by far the most inspirational to me. The eras represented here are I think the artist's best work."

Max Huber, Stanislaus von Moos, Mara Campana and Giampiero Bosoni  "I was so happy when Phaidon published this book. I specifically like Huber's exhibition design. Modernism kind of killed the craft of exhibitions and I'm glad this book decided to refresh our memory."

Magnum Cinema, Alain Bergala  "Epic! That's all I can say. Doing a book of photographs related to filmmaking is an impossible task at best, and this book just hits the nail right on the head. Make movies!"

Contemporary Artists Series: Raymond Pettibon  "Again, in my opinion, the definitive book on this artist. It seems like a new Pettibon book comes out every year, but nothing yet has really compared to this one."

Alexey Brodovitch, Kerry Willi am Purcell " This is an absolutely beautiful book. I love that Brodovitch was a teacher before he even worked for Harper's Bazaar. Many times people have many other lives than the ones they become famous for."
