“A lot of people seem to think that art or photography is about the way things look, or the surface of things,” says the photographer Nan Goldin. “That's not what it's about for me. It's really about relationships and feelings.”
Gallery goers across the world have understood and appreciated Nan’s tender, bittersweet relationships for decades. Goldin’s photography of her friends and lovers is in the permanent collections of The Whitney, The Tate and The Museum of Modern Art. Since the 1980s, Goldin has consistently created photographs that are intimate and compelling: they tell personal stories of relationships, friendships and identity, chronicling different eras and exposing the passage of time as it has affected the close circle she has photographed over the years.
As the Italian gallerist, author and long-standing confidant Guido Costa writes in Nan’s monograph, Eden and After, “there is a secret family that has been part of Nan Goldin’s world for over thirty years now. A miniature, colourful tribe, scattered across both sides of the Atlantic.”
Some, such as the actress Cookie Mueller or fellow photographer David Armstrong have passed away. Others, including the kids in Eden and After, have barely begun to live. Yet, neither birth nor death reduces the power of a Goldin photograph.
“My desire is to preserve the sense of people’s lives, to endow them with the strength and beauty I see in them,” the photographer once said. “I want the people in my pictures to stare back.”

Each of the Cibachrome prints is exquisitely printed, and measures 356 x 533 mm (14 x 21 inches). Each is limited to a run of 100 (plus five artist’s proofs), comes with a copy of Goldin’s 2004 book The Devil’s Playground, and is beautifully bound, signed and numbered and packaged in dedicated presentation box.
There’s a luminous shot of Guido floating in the Meditarranean sea just off the coast of Sicily, southern Italy, in 1999; a pensive image of Goldin’s French friend Valérie, in the back of a Parisian taxicab in 2001; and a deeply intimate photograph of Jens’ hand on Clemen's back, taken in the French capital, also in 2001.
