Create an oasis of hanging plants in your home with String Gardens

If you live in the city and have ever wished for a garden, there is a solution. Dutch artist and gardener Fedor Van der Valk has created a series of self-supporting, hanging plant containers to help you create an indoor oasis to rival the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Van der Valk explains: “For a while I wanted to make animated videos with crocheted landscapes which were a kind of 3-dimensional spider web covered in moss and grass. The idea was to create bonsai-esque plants. To keep the landscapes really airy, I decided to work with hanging plants.” And so began the String Gardens project. 

The roots are covered in a ball of moss and grass and if you're wondering how to water your string garden, Van der Valk advises holding the dry plant in the base of a bowl of water until the bubbles stop, before hanging it back above the bowl until all the excess water drips back.

By using varying lengths of string you can create gardens at different heights – hovering at eye-level or skimming the floor. Flourishing blooms in the dining room, or a tropical forest in the bathroom, string gardens will redefine the interior landscape of your house.
