Today, a selection of major sculptural and video works by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei go on show at Lisson Gallery, London (until 16 July). Ai has not been seen since he was detained by the Chinese authorities at Beijing airport on 3 April and in continuing to raise awareness of Ai's plight, an enormous Free Ai Weiwei campaign banner is hanging outside the gallery.

This retrospective of 13 key works from the last six years reveals the variety of strands to Ai's practice, and is haunted by Ai's unknown whereabouts. Interlaced with his role as a socio-political critic and commentator, his artistic practice plays with concepts of old and new; copied and fake; and assumed measurements of cultural value. The show is a good introduction to the work of Ai and is haunted by his absence.

Ai's Circle of Animal/Zodiac Heads are on display around the courtyard of Somerset House (until 26 June) and Phaidon, along with leading international arts community members, have signed a petition calling for the release of Ai.
