The photojournalist visits places others will never reach
A ground-breaking event when it first launched in 2005, the week-long Angkor Photo Festival is now an established date on the calendar. The 6th edition opens in Siem Reap, Cambodia, this Saturday.
Curated by respected photographers Yumi Goto and Antoine d’Agata, and the festival's programme director Françoise Callier, this year's event will continue to highlight the work of emerging as well as established photographers, with 50 of the 110 participating photographers originating from Asia. A total of fourteen exhibitions and seven evenings of outdoor slideshows, which are free of charge to visitors, will take place across the city in a variety of locations, including the busy Old Market Bridge, a busy thoroughfare chosen to make the point that this is a festival for the people instead of the privileged.
The festival is particularly distinct from other international photography events in having an outreach focus; former participants in the Angkor Photo Workshops - given free by renowned photographers to encourage emerging Asian talent - supervise photography sessions for the children of Anjali House, a centre created by the Angkor Photo Association to provide care, refuge and education for more than 80 under-privileged children between the ages of four and sixteen years old.
