Since its inauguration in 1985, MoMA’s annual exhibition of emerging art photographers has showcased the talents of such dignities as Philip Lorca diCorcia, Thomas Demand, Rineke Dijkstra and Sara VanDerBeek.
The theme connecting the four photographers in the 25th of MoMA's New Photography exhibitions is 'appropriation' - a fitting topic given that the first New Photography show focussed on 're-photographers' such as Richard Prince and Sherrie Levine. Roe Ethridge borrows directly from commercial images already in circulation, including outtakes from his own illustrational magazine work; Elad Lassry's work is concerned with generic images lifted from consumer society, such as Hollywood publicity stills and design illustrations; Ross-Ho’s hand-drilled sheetrock panels are lined up with found pictures and mural-scale images of studio residues and Alex Prager takes her inspiration from pulp fiction and the fashion images of Guy Bourdin to construct filmic narratives. Covering editorial work, film, and visual art, together their pictures represent the intersecting currents of photography today.
