MOPLA: Adaptations and Reverberations
A portrait of a disappearing China: Danny Lyon's photo journal: Deep Sea Diver
Travelling across northern China with a translator named Lolly Pop and a vintage Leica, Danny Lyon's photographs provide a unique perspective
Starting today, the Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA), presented by the Lucie Foundation, will showcase the work of LA's photography community (1-30 April). This year's theme is 'Adaptations and Reverberations': an exploration of contemporary photography's ever-changing landscape, and includes commercial and fine art photography and photojournalism. Through a variety of exhibitions, discussions and projections MOPLA aims to 'embody the fluidity and versatility of the photographic medium.'
Conceived and organised by Hossein Farmani and Cat Jimenez, who also founded the Focus on Aids Photography Auction, the Lucie Foundation and the Lucie Awards, MOPLA began in April 2009 and has since become a key photography event in the US.
This year the exhibits and photographers range far and wide; Felice Beato's A Photographer on the Eastern Road captures early images of British colonies spanning across India, China, Japan and Burma, while Larry Fink's Hollywood, 2000-2009 gets up close to celebrities at the Oscars.
