ABOUT THE PRINT

In 1957 when Burri's career was burgeoning, he heard that the great artist Picasso was in Nimes. Burri travelled to the south of France hoping to find the world's most famous living artist. Before he knew it he found himself in a small room full of people in the Hotel du Cheval Blanc, at the centre of the action was Picasso, sitting in bed - laughing, singing and clapping. The evening extended to dinner and, with thirteen around the table, René was invited to make the fourteenth in the party. His relationship with Picasso flourished from there and Burri photographed him on various occasions.

This particular photograph was taken later in that first year of their friendship, when Burri was on assignment for Du magazine and photographing Picasso at home in Ville La Californie, Cannes. In his trademark Breton stripes, with a pet bird and his own work in the background, Burri captures the man and the legend in a coy moment of private amusement.

ABOUT THE BOOK

René Burri Photographs comprises the culmination of years of scholarly research by distinguished writer Hans Michael Koetzle into Burri's important contribution to reportage photography, resulting in an incisive introduction, a series of in-depth essays at the beginning of each chapter and in extended captions that accompany each image. The book is designed by prominent Swiss graphic designer Werner Jeker of ADN Design, Lausanne.

In 21 thematically-organized chapters, we accompany Burri across Europe to the Middle East, Vietnam, Brazil, Cuba and beyond; we visit Picasso, Le Corbusier, Yves Klein and Giacometti in their studios; we witness political figures such as Che Guevara in repose, and Fidel Castro at the helm. A work of epic scope in its own right, this book is a magnificent tour de force.

About the author(s)
A member of the prestigious Magnum photo agency, Burri is a photographer whose curiosity and humanity as a photographer have afforded him almost unrestricted access to the major events and personalities of the last 50 years.
